Preparing for Adulthood

The SEND Code of Practice says:

Preparing for adulthood means preparing for:

  • higher education and/or employment – this includes exploring different employment options, such as support for becoming self-employed and help from supported employment agencies
  • independent living – this means young people having choice, control and freedom over their lives and the support they have, their accommodation and living arrangements, including supported living
  • participating in society, including having friends and supportive relationships, and participating in, and contributing to, the local community
  • being as healthy as possible in adult life

(SEND CoP 7.38)

Higher Education and/or Employment

Navigating change and new environments can be tough for many young people with SEND. But the good news is, there are plenty of strategies and support available to make those transitions smoother. The key is to start planning ahead as early as you can. That way, you can feel more prepared and confident as you take on new challenges. Whether it's starting a new school, moving to college, or finding a job, there are lots of techniques and resources to help you succeed in your next chapter. Don't be afraid to reach out and get the support you need - you've got this!

Many students with SEND will go on to study at University. If you have an EHCP, this will end when you start your higher education study such as a degree, but your EHCP has details in it than can still help universities to support you.

As you look ahead, you may also want to start thinking about your future career. How can you prepare for the working world? What kind of job do you want, and how will you earn a living? These are big questions, but with the right planning, you can get ready for an exciting next chapter.

Independent living

As a  young person, you may already be thinking about moving out of the family home to live independently or with support. Preparing for this transition to adulthood requires thoughtful consideration of when you will be ready to leave home, where you will live, and what specific support or skills you may need to thrive. Additionally, you will need to think about managing your money, keeping yourself safe, developing friendships, and becoming an active member of the local community.

Being part of society

You can help your young person think about living in their wider community and how they will have a social life. Help them to think about their interests and hobbies, whether they want to join clubs or organisations and where they will meet and find friends. Some young people choose a volunteer role to begin with, to help them feel more independent and get a feel for the world of work.

Being healthy

As well as thinking about exercise and diet, your young person will need to take steps to stay healthy and well. This might mean regular check-ups, such as at the dentist and an on-going health plan with the professionals they see already like an OT, doctor, physiotherapist, specialist nurse or consultant. The health professionals they see are likely to change as they move from child to adult services and this needs to be planned well in advance.
